ATLAS Announces Collaboration with Texas A&M Engineering Program
Community to Serve as Pilot Site for Autonomous Vehicle Initiatives
(BRYAN, Texas) – ATLAS – the premier corporate campus in the Brazos Valley – announces a partnership with the Texas A&M Engineering Program, in which the development and its burgeoning town center, Lake Walk, will serve as a pilot site for autonomous vehicle initiatives from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Texas A&M Transportation Institute.
Via the alliance, an autonomous golf cart will transport individuals from The Stella Hotel to Traditions Club and Community, with the goal of expanding to other areas in the future. Researchers will also ride in each cart to ensure the vehicle’s safety and record observations.
“We have been developing autonomous shuttles at Texas A&M for the past year,” says Srikanth Saripalli, Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University. “This will enable us to test and demonstrate the viability of autonomous vehicles in real world conditions.”
The program’s launch occurs July 26-29, with shuttles servicing from The Stella Hotel to Traditions Club 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. on July 26. On July 27-29, the shuttles will run from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Testing within ATLAS is part of a larger enterprise to see how automated travel can best serve the public interest.
“The establishment of a pilot test community at ATLAS by the Texas A&M Engineering Program is ideal,” says Spencer Clements, Principal, ATLAS and Traditions Development. “Our selection for the autonomous vehicle initiative captures the spirit of empowering growth and opportunities here at ATLAS.”
